So on Saturday 16th July John and I set off for the National Working & Pastoral Breeds Society Championship Show at Malvern. This time we only took Comar. It was a long drive which was made to feel even longer due to the terrible weather.

Although the weather was a lot easier in Malvern it was decided to show the dogs indoors and indoors is the cattle sheds. These sheds were absolutely heaving and very noisey. Didn't think I would get Comar in but surprise surprise he did.

He managed to Reserve Best Dog. Good result.

East of England Dog Show- 9th July 2011

Above is a photo Asalet Comar and Asalet Ayca (red collar). She is 3.5 years of age and as much as she is indifferent to dog shows when she is there she always does what you want her to do and yesterday was no different. She went like a dream at the Show and was rewarded with Best Bitch and Best Opposite Sex. Well done Ayca.

Comar on the other hand is a different story. When he is at home he is a very happy and content dog. Some of you will know that in March I took him to Crufts where he flatly refused to enter the Show Ring. No amount of tugging and coaxing was going to work so I had to admit defeat sadly. I thought this was an isolated case.

More recently I took him to the Blackpool Championship show where this time he flatly refused to even enter to the Showground and again no end of tugging and coaxing would persuade him otherwise. One of the officials at the show said to me "If you don't mind me saying love you are being a little too nice to him. You need to get that right tone of voice". He was right. I went back to the car and tried again and although I got him a little further he still would not go to the Show Ring. We went home fed up with each other.

So we were up early yesterday in preparation for the show and Comar guessing what was going on went and hid in his kennel. We had a easy journey to Peterborough as it is our most local show and to our surprise and delight he entered the Showground quite easily. Even walking around the Showground he was relatively relaxed.

When our turn came to show I was feeling nervous and positive at the same time and this time he went into the ring happily and showed superbly with no hesitation. He strode out in style and stood perfectly. For this he was rewarded with Best Male and Best of Breed. It doesn't get any better than that.

The win was made more special with him being a white fawn without the typical black mask but he DOES comply with the breed standard.

We stayed on to enter Best of Group to give him the experience as this ring is more like Crufts as it was an indoor ring with carpet. Again, he moved superbly and like an old pro even though he will only be 2 years of age at the end of the month. Well done Comar.

So what changed since the 26th June (Blackpool Show)? We have taken him to a new weekly ringcraft club and although he has only been twice he justs get better and this class gives him more 1:1 attention and thinks "outside the box" and along with the extra 1:1 attention he is receiving at home he is coming along very well. Of course I have also found that inner confidence and firmer voice as previously advised.

Long may it reign!! Let's see what next Saturday's show brings.

Asalet Dostca

Below is Dostca at 12 weeks of age at home where she ruled the roost with the big ones. She has all the spirit and personality of an adult and forgot that she was a puppy and particularly so when the adult dogs went into "guarding" mode after hearing a noise outside.

The picture below is of her resting after a hard playtime. (If any of my new puppy owners are reading this I did say in my list of Do's and Don'ts not to let your puppy on the furniture don't do as I do do as I say !!!).

Here she is again resting with Ayca who became her second mother when Ulli was snoozing.

In this photo below Dostca can be forgiven for looking a little weary. Yesterday she travelled 3 hours to London Heathrow ahead of her journey to her Bermuda where a new and exciting life awaited her. A few tears were shed then. I did get a call late last night to let us know that she had arrived safely. Thanks goodness.

East of England Championship Show

John and I travelled to our local Championship Show today the East of England Championship Show. It's just over one hour away - fantastic (home for lunch)

Our judge on the day ws Mr Peter Radley.

We were lucky enough to get Reserve Best Dog for Comar (below) who also got Best Puppy as he is just over 11 months of age.
The Best Bitch and Best of Breed went to Bal (below) who is just approaching 2 years of age.

Comar is coming along very nicely and doing particularly well at Championship Shows. On his last outing which was the Bath Championship Show he got Best Puppy. Next show is Blackpool on the 27th June.

National Dog Show - May 2010

The weather was great for the National Dog Show in May. Comar and I went along where he picked up Reserve Best Dog Dog and Best Puppy. Our judge on the day was Mrs Peggy Bailey.

The entry wasn't so good this year so we all need to try harder if we are to keep our classes. Sadly, the Richmond Show are no longer offering us classes.

On the 17th April we had a long drive to the above show held in Builth Wells. Our alarm went off at 03:30 - who knew that there were two 3:30's in one day!!!

This was Comar's first Championship Show and his longest journey to date. At 8.5 months of age Comar handled the journey quite well which was helped along with a few stops on route. His travelling companion also took the journey well but I must admit they were glad to be home as were we all. It has been a few years since we have done this show and now I know why.

The journey was made worthwhile when Comar was awarded Best Puppy and Ayca was awarded Best of Breed (see certificate below). Many thanks to our judge on the day Mrs J Peak.

Here are a few photos taken recently. Photo One is of Ayca and Comar. Ayca is now 2 years old and Comar is just over 6 months.

Photo 2 is of Comar who will turn 7 months in the next week. His father is Cesur and his mother is Ulli. I am particulary proud of him and looking forward to getting him out and about on the Show circuit. Regrettably, though he won't be at Crufts next month.

Photo 3 is of Gabby who is just a couple of weeks away from celebrating her 10th birthday. We took her to the beach this weekend and everyone that met her thought she was a puppy. She has little to no grey hair and is doing very well particularly since we had her coat trimmed. She does sometime have some aches in her left leg but she is on Yumove and it is absolutely brilliant. I would recommend this to anyone who has a dog with mobility problems.

So on Sunday, 12th July John and I together with Bal and Cesur went off to the East of Engand Show i.e. Peterborough which is really quite local for us.

Although Cesur managed to secure Reserve Best Dog he was really in the mood for "showing off" and constantly barked throughout our time there and giving anyone who saw him the wrong idea. My theory is that because at home he is dominated by all females he was showing who was the boss. He was a real handful.

Bal on the other hand is a sweet puppy although still quite anxious when at shows although she is improving albeit slowly. She doesn't mind the running away from the judge but she is less than keen on the return. It's not that she minds returning to the judge she would just sooner run to John or whatever other dog we have with us on the day. However, on the day she did get Best Puppy in Breed.

So, on Saturday, 18th July we went off to the National Working & Pastoral Breeds Association Show in Malvern and although we had Ayca, Bal and Cesur entered we made a decision to leave Cesur at home and give ourselves an easier day.

The judge, Mr Jack Bispham, on the day found his Best of Breed in our own Asalet Ayca. She is such a little star and does everything she is asked and a real pleasure to take out. Below is her Kennel Club Award Card.

Bal was much the same as the week before and again was awarded Best Puppy in Breed.

This is something that they do as part of their training which is great but I do have to say you don't see many photographs of an Anatolian sitting.

These are just three photos taken from one of John's trips to Turkey. I really like them but for different reasons. The first one in particular does show a bitch with some of her puppies which obviously shows that these litters comes in all colours and tri colours.

The other two are really great also.

It is worthy of a mention that there are some people out there using John's photos and passing them off as their own - BEWARE. Self promotion only. On top of that they are quoting copyright restrictions!!

Surely it would be better if those concerned could be honest or better still go to Turkey and get their own photos. Not likely.

Received an email this week from Izzet and Suzy with an update on Bela.

You may notice the red patch on her nose. I am told she had a fight with the shed which resulted in the scratch. The shed now needs 3 new planks.

All told I am pleased to hear she is doing very well and enjoys her daily walks in Alexandra Park Palace. She has a great pal called Maximus. He is a year old boxer as can be seen in one of the photos.

Nothing in this post that hasn't already been said but I thought it would be worthwhile repeating.

The Anatolian Shepherd Dog is an ancient flock protecting dog (they do not herd) found throughout rural Turkey that is known by the Turkish Shepherd’s as Çoban Kőpeği which translates as Shepherd Dog.

In more recent times these dogs are being referred to by some as Kangal, which is a newly created name favouring dogs from the Kangal/Sivas area that are fawn with a black mask. This modern name excludes many excellent dogs from any other region. The Turkish Shepherd's throughout time have continually selected dogs purely for their working ability, allowing only the best dogs to continue their lines regardless of colour, with form and function being their only criteria.

The Anatolian Shepherd Dog can be seen in Turkey in a variety of colours, ranging from white through to red, whole coloured or even tri-colour. The coat is short to rough with neck hair slightly longer and thicker at neck and mane. A thick undercoat is common to all. Feathering on ear fringes, legs, breeching and tail may be seen with rough coats.

The Breed standard in the UK was amended in May 2004 and is now more in line with the FCI and the American Kennel Club whereby accepting all colours as depicted in these photographs. The Anatolian Shepherd Dog is large and powerfully built and is a formidable animal and with a presence unlike many other breeds. Although they are normally, a very calm dog they can spring into action without any warning. When alert the tail is normally curled over reaching the dogs back.

This is not a breed for the faint hearted. They are strong willed and a thinking dog and will try to outwit you on occasion.This breed gets under your skin and once they have allowed you to live with them you will find it hard to live without them. Although the Anatolian here in the UK is predominantly a pet or show dog socialisation is essential to help its behaviour. The Anatolian Shepherd Dog does not always tolerate other dogs. The Anatolian is easy maintenance. They require very little grooming although daily grooming will help to reduce hair shedding throughout the home and a heavier shedding should be expected from the rougher coated Anatolians for several weeks during the moulting period. They are self-cleaning and bathing is not a necessary requirement. Exercise whilst growing should be restricted.

They do like to play and run loose although a secured area is essential, as sometimes they may not see the need to return to its master when running free. Furthermore, this breed is not the type that will fetch a ball all day! You may find yourself doing your own retrieving.

This breed does not suffer from any major health issues.

The Anatolian is also generally long lived for a large breed. Breed Standard
Large, upstanding, tall, powerfully built, with broad, heavy head and short dense coat. Must have size, stamina and speed.

Active breed used originally as a guard dog for sheep; hard working; capable of enduring extremes of heat and cold.

Steady and bold without aggression, naturally independent, very intelligent. Proud and confident.

Skull large, broad and flat between ears. Slight furrow between eyes and slight stop. Mature males have broader head than females. Foreface one- third of total head length. Slightly pendulous black lips. Square profile. Nose black.

Eyes - Rather small in proportion to size of skull, set well apart and deep, showing no haw. Golden to brown in colour. Eye rims black.

Ears - Medium-sized, triangular in shape, rounded at tip, carried flat to skull and pendant, higher when alert.

Mouth - Teeth strong, with a perfect, regular and complete scissor bite, i.e. upper teeth closely overlapping lower teeth and set square to the jaws. Lips black.

Neck - Slightly arched, powerful, muscular, moderate in length, rather thick. Slight dewlap.
Forequarters -Shoulders well muscled and sloping. Forelegs set well apart, straight and well boned; of good length; strong pasterns, slightly sloping when viewed from side. Elbows close to sides.

Body -Chest deep to point of elbow, ribs well sprung. Body powerful, well muscled, never fat. Level back. Body in proportion to leg length, slightly arched over loins, with good tuck-up.
Hindquarters - Powerful, lighter than forequarters; moderate turn of stifle.

Feet - strong with well arched toes. Nails short.

Tail -Long, reaching at least to hock. Set on rather high. When relaxed carried low with slight curl, when alert carried high with end curled over back, especially by males.

Gait/Movement -Relaxed even gait, with impression of latent power, very supple movement. Noticeable straight line of head, neck and body, giving impression of stalking in some dogs. Great drive when viewed from side.

We were out in the garden with the dogs and just took a few snaps to share on the blog. Above is Gabby our 9 year old Bernese Mountain Dog. She is just wonderful.

Here is Cesur looking as though he has just been caught out - digging or something!!

Here is Ayca. What a super little girl she is and spends so much of her time in the garden just relaxing.

And here is little Bal. She is now 10 months old. She is such a dear little thing but a little timind when away from home so we are having to do some work with her i.e. socialising her and dog training etc. and there is already great improvement - thank goodness.

Leo goes Reserve Best in Show

John and I thought we would take Bal and Leo to a local Companion Show. Bal in particular needs to be socialised as much as we can as although she is a cocky little thing at home away from home she is a little timid - but she is getting better.

So we thought we would only be out for a couple of hours but Leo went on to win Reserve Best in Show which was much more than we could have expected. There were over 70 dogs there so he did do well.

What a pleasure Leo was to take out. He has an absolutely fantastic temperament and never puts a foots wrong. What a credit to the breed.

What a great day for 'Eddie' and Moira at their first Championship Show yesterday. The National Dog Show now held at the Staffs County Showground gave us classes again for the first time in quite a few years. Our judge on the day was Mrs Ann Arch who is no stranger to our breed.

Ann found her Best Dog and Best of Breed in Asalet Amir known by us all as Eddie.

Well done to both who today enjoyed their first lie-in since Eddie's arrival. 10:00 a.m. they were both whacked.

Our own Ullikumis of Asalet got Best Bitch and Best Opposite Sex on the day.

Asalet Bal was awarded Best Puppy in Breed although I have to say she really wasn't on her best behaviour as she exhibited a great deal of nervousness so much so she even snapped so we have some work to do with her as this is not acceptable behaviour for our dogs and not good for Anatolians generally. At home she is of the most wonderful personality and very affectionate and actually quite cocky. Luckily, Ann as a very experienced judge saw through this.

Update from Tonka in Bermuda

I had an email from Alli and Sean this week updating me on Tonka.

I am told that Tonka remains a great dog.

Alli tells me he is a far better companion than any dog she has ever had previously and he has already matured into a true gentleman.

He has also become an excellent running partner and particularly enjoys running as fast as we can through the trails of a nearby park. Alli used to 'jog' but Tonka enjoys a faster pace. His personality is calm and almost human.

Alli and Sean have had the same issues as Rachel and Stuart - the car. They have had to buy a different car in October as Tonka did not fit in our sedan alone (much less with the other dogs).

Asalet Berna (known as Charlie)

Bernie and Nick sent me these photos of Charlie in February so apologies that it has taken me so long to get them on the blog page.

Bernie says "She may be a little lady, but she's also a little madam! She has some very typical traits of the Anatolian - she loves digging huge holes, and we have some very fine examples in the garden. (how come you didn't have any in your garden?). She also has selective hearing, and if she's distracted by something (like a rabbit) she totally ignores us when we call her and refuses to come back. This must be the 'independent' streak that Anatolians have! She's still curious about everything, especially those things that she can't get to, like... our cat (who won't let Charlie within five feet of her), and birds in trees; she can't get near them and it drives her mad! She still gets up onto the bay window and watches village life pass by.

She absolutely loves people, and when we take her for a walk, she lunges at any human that passes within a couple of feet; she just wants to play with them, but some people aren't too keen on having a big dog trying to jump up and lick them, but others think it's great. This can make going for a walk a bit of a challenge! She does attract a fair bit of attention when we're out because she's so gorgeous looking. And she does love the attention She's still very bouncy and puppyish and finding lots of things new and exciting.

We're taking her to training classes every week, and she really loves meeting the other dogs - she's very sociable. She can do everything they ask in the classes, she's very clever. But away from the classes she'll only do things if she feels like it, and it's as if she's indulging us by doing what we ask of her!!! She's still very affectionate and loves being petted and cuddled, which is fine by me. She's getting very big now and when she stands on her hind legs she's almost as tall as I am".

These are the sort of emails that John and I like getting - they give us a huge amount of pleasure.

The current mean for the breed is "14".

The mean for this breed rarely changes because so few breeders and owners actually hip score so in my opinion anyone that goes to trouble and expense of carrying out hip scoring should be applauded as this can only benefit the breed in the long run. Ideally though, in my opinion, the left and right hips should be of a similar score.

Asalet Berna (known as Charlie)

Here is Asalet Berna known at home as Charlie who lives with Nick and Bernadette.

Again, she has settled well into her new home and is quite an attention seeker which doesn't surprise me one bit as she was like that during her time here. Although she was one of the smaller girls she was just wonderful and had oodles of personality and loved being picked up and hugged which I didn't mind either!!

I am told she is a real character, steals anything that she knows she shouldn't, gets very excitable at times, and - like a toddler - is curious about everything and anything.
She's discovered that she can get up onto the bay window and watch the world go by, and that's her favourite place during the day.

Asalet Bazi

Many thanks to Hanif for sending me these photos of Asalet Bazi (known as Pasa). Again, another puppy settling well into his new life.

The majority of the puppies have very dark masks which comes from Vayou (dad).

It is so hard letting these puppies go and lots of tears so for me it is especially nice to receive emails and photos with updates. Thank you.

Asalet Beni

Beni now resides in France with his dad Vayou from the Des Shumagins Kennels. The top two were taken a few weeks ago just after his arrival and meeting dad and the others were taken recently. We are really pleased to hear that he is settling well and love the photos.

Here is Ulli. She is in good health following the birth of the puppies although she has lost a little weight so we are now trying to get her back to peak fitness. She has been a very good mum.

The pictures above are of Ayca enjoying the winter sunshine and lazing in the garden. Ayca is now 8.5 months of age and coming along lovely.

The puppies are studying what the big dogs are up to in the garden. I sometimes let them all out together with Cesur as big as he is runs away from the puppies and the more he runs away the more they run after him. Thankfully, though no question over his temperament.

Here is Gabby - she isn't often photographed as she prefers to be indoors and especially so when the puppies are about. Again, excellent temperament but really not that keen on the puppies. All her coat is coming off on Monday when she goes to the grooming parlour for a wash 'n' clip. She loves it and looks and feels much better for it and it certainly helps to reduce the hair around the house.

Puppy Updates

Here are a couple of photos of puppies from Ulli's litter. The top one is of Fern and Kai. As readers may recall Stuart and Rachel had Fern earlier in the year and she was from Ugarit's litter and now she has a new best friend in Kai a male from Ulli's litter. I am sure they will thrive in each others company as I believe Anatolians always do better in the company of Anatolians. It just helps them to understand what they are about and I believe it more because of our own experiences. We had Ravak years ago living with a Rottie, Ridgeback and Bernese Mountain Dog but once he got a mate in the form of Ana things just got better for him.

The second photo is of Pasha and she to has a new little friend and his name is Jumble. They are getting along just great but I am told she is less keen on the family cat!

AYCA - BOS Darlington Championship Show

On Saturday, 13th September Ayca and I travelled to the Darlington Championship Show which is held at Newby Hall, Ripon.

Although the sun shone and it was in fact a warm day the showground was still a mud bath and by the time judging had finished we were knee deep in mud and I just gave up on any chance of keeping Ayca clean.

We arrived at the showground in plenty of time to allow Ayca time to get over her journey and whilst we were at the back of the car the van parked alongside us with dobermans in it - one of them came charging out and being very aggressive and flew at Ayca. No damage was done (although I say that) in that although it went for her there was a lot of noise and I managed to put my leg between then it frightened Ayca terribly and her day was spoilt as she never got over it.

At the time of judging Ayca who is normally a little show off was quite timid although the she did on to get Best Puppy, Best Bitch and Best Opposite Sex. Our judge was Pauline Suhr from Australia who told me she thought Ayca was super and would have liked to have given her Best of Breed but she was a little timid on the day. So there you go the Dobermans cost me BOB. To say I was a little disappointed was an understatement.

Hopefully, Ayca will make a full recovery and not allow this isolated case to spoil her!

Asalet Ayca - Best of Breed

Asalet Ayca attended her first Championship Show today aged 7.5 months. She got Best Puppy, Best Bitch and Best of Breed. Our judge was Mrs Sue Searle who did say that she wouldn't normally give Best of Breed to such a young dog but that she thought Ayca was stunning.

I didn't attend the show so Anthony, our grandson, stepped in and showed Ayca which he obviously did very well so thanks very much Anthony. We miss you. Anthony is well used to showing Anatolians and had some significant successes in his time. He has also travelled extensively throughout Turkey and also attended the Kangal Festival.

Ayca is the daughter of Ugarit (below) who we imported from the Des Shumagins Kennels in France and she is very much "Ugarit's daughter" in many ways.
